How SIP Paging Works for Broadcast Announcements in Factories and Schools

Announcements over a PA speaker are still one of the most effective ways to reach a lot of people at once across a large space, factories, schools, malls, office complexes. SIP paging brings this kind of announcement system into the digital era, with far more flexible control than a conventional analog PA system.

What is SIP paging?

SIP paging is a broadcast audio system that runs over an IP network using the SIP protocol, similar to an IP phone call, except it sends audio to a lot of speakers at once instead of a single recipient. Every speaker has its own IP address and can be grouped into specific zones.

How zone-based paging works

One of the biggest advantages of SIP paging over analog PA is zone control. With the Fanvil PA3 broadcast gateway, every speaker is assigned a zone number, and staff just press a zone number from a SIP phone (for example press "1" for zone 1) to send an announcement to a specific area, up to 20 zones. So you can address only the production floor without disturbing the admin office, or broadcast to the entire building at once for an emergency. PA3 also has a line-out to an analog power amplifier, so existing analog speakers in the building can still be used without replacing them.

Ways to send an announcement

• Live paging: real-time announcements through a microphone
• Scheduled broadcasts: automatic announcements on a timer, like a class bell or a factory break announcement
• Pre-recorded messages: messages recorded ahead of time, played as needed
• Emergency broadcast: top-priority announcements that automatically interrupt whatever audio is currently playing

Sending announcements from a console or SIP phone

Announcements can be sent from the Fanvil A330i broadcast console, which has a touchscreen with a built-in paging, intercom, and scheduling system, or straight from an ordinary SIP phone by pressing a zone number. For larger projects, the A330i can manage up to 300 SIP endpoints in one system, so a single operator can reach the whole building from one point.

Choosing speakers for the right location
