If your office Wi-Fi slows to a crawl every time everyone's on a video call, or half the meeting room can't get a signal, you've probably wondered whether it's time to upgrade. The real question is whether Wi-Fi 6 is still enough, or whether you should jump straight to Wi-Fi 7.
What's actually different between Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is the mature standard that most modern business networks run on today. Its OFDMA technology lets a single access point serve many devices at once efficiently, instead of handing them off one at a time like older standards did. For an office with dozens of devices active simultaneously, that's already a big leap from Wi-Fi 5.
Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) is the newest generation, and it brings three major upgrades: channel widths up to 320MHz (double what Wi-Fi 6 offers), Multi-Link Operation (MLO) that lets a device connect across multiple frequency bands at once for lower latency, and 4K-QAM modulation that pushes peak speeds into the tens of gigabits per second.
When Wi-Fi 6 is still plenty
For a small to mid-size office with standard usage, browsing, email, the occasional video call, and fewer than 50 active devices per access point, Wi-Fi 6 is still more than capable and considerably cheaper. The bottom line
Not every office needs to rush to Wi-Fi 7. If your needs are still fairly standard and budget is tight, Wi-Fi 6 remains a solid, long-lasting choice. But if you're dealing with high device density, need low latency, or have expansion plans in the next two or three years, investing in Wi-Fi 7 now usually works out cheaper than upgrading in stages later.
